Retractable lanyards are useful, economical and easy to buy. You can get them in school supplies stores, office supplies stores and on the internet and they cost about a dollar each. The most basic retractable lanyards might cost less than a dollar per unit.

Retractable lanyards are used in conjunction with ID badges. Rather than punch in key codes, an employee can simply swipe their ID badge using a retractable lanyard. This is certainly more convenient and takes mere seconds.

If you have clips instead of a retractable lanyard, these can be prone to break from excessive use or force. A retractable badge holder on a lanyard is simpler to use and will last for longer than clips.

How Retractable Lanyards Work

A retractable lanyard means that you can have your ID badge securely fastened, have it to hand and be able to pull it closer to the swipe machine, rather than have to bring yourself closer to the machine. Retractable lanyards might be simple little things but they do make life easier.

Custom Made Retractable Lanyards

As well as being attractive, custom made retractable lanyards make excellent promotional tools. They do not cost much so you can give them away during fundraising events or promotional events. A clinic might have a retractable lanyard badge in the shape of a pill, for example. You can get heart shaped lanyard badges, square or circular ones and you can have the name of your company or group printed on them.

You can choose from a variety of materials if you are interested in buying retractable lanyards and it is important to think about these carefully. If your company uses metal detectors, you will want to avoid metal parts in your retractable badge holders and lanyards, for example, else your employees will have to remove the retractable badge holder, swipe it and put it on again. This would defeat the whole point of having a retractable lanyard.

Fiberglass can be a good material for a retractable badge holder on a lanyard because you can custom make it with logos, graphics or text. Fiberglass is great for office workers but because it can break or scratch, it is not so good for rough terrain or places where the temperature changes a lot. Rubber, plastic, steel, aluminum and clear polymer are other options.

Retractable lanyards are durable and make life simpler. Relying on clips instead is far less convenient and replacing ID cards which have been lost because of faulty clips costs more than replacing a retractable lanyard. If security is an issue, a retractable lanyard is the safest and most secure way staff can carry their ID cards and have them on display all the time.
